Sometimes our hobbies can fuel our work, and vice versa. Confession? I have a mild obsession with genealogy. I love unearthing my family history through documents, experiences, and the thrill of the search. But one thing that can really make my eyes pop open, is some of the lettering that I’ve seen through my document searches. This morning, I was barrelling through some German emigration records, and had to stop and admire the script letterforms. After I married my husband, I had to suddenly create a new signature using the last name Zerr instead of Witman. It was odd, and unnatural, and still to this day I have a hard time with letter “z”. But today, I found such a variety of examples, that I might just start experimenting with my signature again! How beautiful are these uppercase script Z’s? Each one is different, probably by a different hand, with a different tool, and at a different time.

And don’t miss the very last image. Those flourishes! That lettering! The seal! So many wonderful elements in this page header, I can hardly contain my excitement!

It’s ironic how something like a hobby can inspire me in my creative journey. These images are definitely getting catalogued somewhere so that I can reference them at a later point. What inspiration surprised you the most? Do you have a strange source of inspiration?
